The Long Journey and Short Life of Gurupreet Kaur
How trying to cross the border the right way can still go terribly wrong.

AL OTRO LADO
The manager of Casa Del Migrante, a shelter in the Mexican border town of Sonoyta, had terrifying news: the cartel wanted to install one of their men at the shelter to run their operations.
He knew exactly who to call.

Objects in Mirror Are Farther Than They Appear
Just one month before 14 men died on The Devil’s Highway in one of the hottest places on earth, Humane Borders had sought permission to install a water station in the area, but their application was denied.
Now, they maintain a series of stations near Yuma, Tucson, and Ajo, Arizona that provide life-saving water to people fleeing poverty and violence.
Recently, one of the tanks was shot up with bullets, drained, and desecrated with that four-letter acronym that is just one letter away from AGUA.
Last week, I joined water runs to El Camino Del Diablo and to the border wall. This is my report of the first run.
You can make a donation to support their work via their webpage: https://www.humaneborders.org/adopt-a-water-station. In the statement of support field, indicate that it is for the Urrea station.

When Fences Make Bad Neighbors
Turns out, inhumane border policies are also bad for the environment.

Look Again
If you look closely, a picture can tell the story of the beauty and the decay, of the prayers for rain and for freedom. Look again.

Voter Suppression Won in 2024
Voter ID laws and purges are unfair by design and discriminatory in implementation. And now we are paying the price.

FIRST DO NO HARM
What is being asked of us is not that we pay attention to everything, but that we find the one thing that feels most urgent.
And so I asked myself: In the chaos of this moment, what could cause irreparable harm? Who is most vulnerable?
